Psychotherapy is a process whereby a client and a therapist work together to explore, understand and eventually work through the difficulties a client is facing in his or her life. Therapy might focus on distinct problems in the here-and-now (for example relationship problems, work stress or a phobia) or be an exploration of issues that are more deep rooted in the client’s past and are still impacting on his/her current life.

Psychotherapy can be thought of as an umbrella term for many different types of practice for example you may have heard of terms such as counselling, psychotherapy, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) used. It can be thought of as a ‘treatment’ for a particular problem such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), depression, anxiety and panic attacks or as a space for personal development to improve one’s quality of life.

It may be quite confusing to decide which form of therapy might best be suited to helping you. As a Counselling Psychologist I have been trained in working with clients in a variety of ways allowing me to be in the position of being able to provide cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), psychotherapy and counselling. This means when we first meet I can help you to decide the best way to approach your problems.
